Good 4...
The good 4 draped bust cent will have a fully outlined bust of liberty and a full date and liberty with only the tops of the letters in liberty and the bottoms of the date worn into the rim. Most of the letters will show on the reverse but a few may be worn away.
Very Good 8...
At the very good level the date and liberty are clearly separated from the rim. The eye and the mouth show and there is clear separation of the hair strands, about half of which are visible. The curls in the hair stand out as distinct entities. Except on very late die state examples, a rim with dentils will show most of the way around. Only a very small amount of separation in the leaves in the reverse wreath can be seen.
Fine 12...
The fine draped bust cent will show almost all of the hair strands and will also show the folds in the drapery on the bust but most of the drapery will be worn smooth. There will be some separation in the leaves in the reverse wreath
Very Fine 20...
At the lowest VF level all of the hair strands are bold and some of the microscopic detail can be seen such as the end of the curl on the neck. There are still significant flat spots such as along the brow, at the tip of the bust, and on each of the little curls. About half of the leaves show separation from their brethren. There is no "mint luster" to be seen.
Very Fine 30...
VF-30 Draped bust cents have only the smallest of flat spots on the high spots of the detail. The largest of these is on the brow-line where the brow is still worn into the forehead. There is full separation of the drapery and all of the leaves are separated. There may still be some mint luster to be seen.
Extremely Fine 40...
The XF cent will have clear separation of the forehead from the brow-line. There are no flat spots on the obverse and only the leaves will look flat on the reverse. There will be some mint luster.
About Uncirculated 50...
AU early cents show much mint luster and are removed from mint state by tiny marks and scratches that were inflicted in a very limited amount of time. Besides the marks, there is some wear that only appears as some darkening of the high points such as the face.
Mint State 60...
The mint state draped bust cent will have uniform color and luster and only the tiniest of marks but no wear.
