The Light

I use a 20 watt halogen light that has a small bulb inside an ~ 2.5 inch diameter brushed metal reflector.  This lamp is neat because it has a transformer contained in the base and power is conducted at low voltage up through the dual telescoping lamp holders.  20 watts seems to be plenty of power to illuminate coins.
