I use a SONY Mavica model number FD-71.  Just as soon as I bought it SONY discontinued it.  The closest to it that they now offer is the FD-75.  You can see the specs for that model here:

The good features about these cameras are that the lens is located on a corner of the camera, the lens can focus very close to the coin, there is an exposure timer, and the images are recorded as jpeg images files on standard 3.5” floppy discs.

 

The lens position facilitates lighting the coin, the lens is such that you can fill the image with a coin as small as a US dime, the timer enables hands free exposures which eliminate out of focus pictures due to camera movement, and the jpeg file format is almost universally viewable and editable.
